History

Realism was created in 1898 by a man named Constantine Stanislavski. It was created in  reaction to "Melodrama' which was a style of theatre that was completely unrealistic. Realism is and was created to reflect "Real Life Situations" and are portrayed in a completely realistic environment. Mr Stanislavski beleived that Realism should reflect real life and you will often find that even today. Realism is quite literal when said 'Real' and often drags on throughout the entire performance without breaks in-between scenes and no intermission because even that was considered 'Unrealistic'.

Naturalism however is a key part in our film and television with such shows as "Home & Away" and "Neighbours" and theatrical movies such as "Hating Alison Ashley" or "The Notebook". You will find Naturalism in most productions. Naturalism was created by a man called Emile Zola and was created around the same time as naturalism and was a sort of fix-up style compared to Realism and introduced breaks and intermissions. Where Realism was rather 'too real' Naturalisam introduced some excitment and did not bore the audience to sleep
